[Frank M.] Chapman. [Colored Plates to Accompany Teachers' Manual of Bird-Life]. [New York: 1899]. Early edition. One hundred plates (91 color and 9 black and white photographs). Octavo. Plates I-LXXV are by Ernest Seton Thompson; plates LXXVI-XCI are by John Bacon; and plates XCII-C are photograph taken by Chapman in 1898. Plates are encased in green cloth flaps in green cloth clamshell box. Plate LXIII is torn at upper left-hand corner; plate XCVII has paper loss at top left-hand corner; and plates XCVIII, XCIX, and C are chipped at right hand bottom corner. Title page is missing. Very good. These plates were originally issued in three portfolios of 33, 37, and 30 plates respectively. Plates I-LXXV first appeared in Chapman's book Bird-Life in 1897 as uncolored and colored in the 1898 edition. The plates by Bacon and the plates of photographs by Chapman did not appear in the book. While the "Teachers' edition" of Bird-Life (1899) is not rare, the suite of plates presented here is.
