[Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes. Los Caprichos. Madrid: Published by the Calcografia Nacional for the Real Academia, [1799, i.e. 1868]. A complete set of eighty etchings, with aquatint, drypoint, and engraving, some with gray wash. Pulled from the original plates by Calcografia Nacional for the Real Academia, Madrid. Most likely the third edition of 1868. Large folio (sheet size: 12.625 x 8.875 inches; 320 x 225 mm.). On wove paper. All plates mounted on guards. Plates numbered at top right. Plates 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are numbered as "P. 2," "P. 3," "P. 4," "P. 5," "P. 6." In this set, Plates 37, 38, and 39 are bound between Plates 45 and 46. Some plates are signed by Goya. Engraved captions in Spanish beneath each plate. Captions in French written in pencil in the lower margin (except for Plate 1, the self-portrait of Goya).

Contemporary half black roan over marbled boards; marbled endpapers. Ribbon bookmark. Front cover detached; binding rubbed, with surface loss at corners and boards exposed; the leather has deteriorated considerably; most of the gilt leather spine has perished (a few pieces laid in). Some mostly light, mostly marginal foxing, heaviest at the beginning and end; a few plates a little darkened or soiled. Short tear to guard of Plate 1 at lower edge. Pencil notes on verso of front free endpaper: "O M / Parke Bernet Sale / 11/3/43 / #139;" and "Copy in West Sale -- Parke-Bernet 1/27/43 / Item #91 Fetched $400 -- appr -- $600;" clipped catalog description for Lot 139 from the 11/3/43 Parke Bernet sale taped to front pastedown.

"A superb collection of etchings pulled from the original plates. While somewhat worn these convey a more faithful conception of the artist's method of work than any modern method of reproduction. They were probably pulled about a century ago" (Parke-Bernet, 11/3/43, Lot 139).

"This edition is well printed and the impressions are still generally good" (Harris). Delteil 38-117; Harris 36-115.
