[Francis Scott Key]. Early Appearance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in The Analectic Magazine, Volume IV, 1814. Four issues of the magazine bound together in one contemporary half calf volume. Very good.

Octavo. August, October, November, and December issues bound together (missing September) . iv, 89-176, 265-496 pages.

Contemporary half calf over decorative boards. Gilt lettering on spine. Inked names and notations from previous owners on front and rear endpapers. Missing two leaves (pages 173/174 and 345/346), some loss to the lower portion page 381/382 as well as the lower portion of the final ten pages. Some significant bumping and shelf wear. Overall a very god copy.

The November issue includes the first magazine appearance of Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner," here under its original title, "Defence [sic] of Fort McHenry," proceeded by an introductory paragraph ( pages 433-434.) The BAL lists six newspapers which printed the poem previous to this issue, between September 20 and October 14 of 1814. Above the first stanza is the line, "Time - Anacreon in Heaven," indicating that the poem is to be sung to the tune of the popular British drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven."

    BAL 11081.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
