    With Rare "Split" Fore-Edge Paintings

[Fore-Edge Paintings]. John Greenleaf Whittier. The Poetical Works of John Greenleaf Whittier. Edited by W. Garrett Horder. London: Henry Frowde, 1898. Complete Edition. Octavo. [xvi], [599], [3, blank] pages. With inserted portrait frontispiece. Bound in contemporary full tree calf, boards decoratively ruled in gilt, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, with burgundy gilt morocco lettering label, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. With two excellent "split" fore-edge paintings depicting the Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers and Washington Crossing the Delaware. Front joint cracking, some sunning and wear to spine and rubbing to board edges. A good copy with excellent fore-edge paintings.

    More Information:

Fore-edge painting of a man and woman playing chess, being watched by an angel. Gauffered edges (unusual for a fore-edge painting). Small octavo. 494 pages. Contemporary full brown pebbled morocco over beveled boards, boards elaborately stamped in black, spine tooled in black and lettered in gilt in compartments, four raised bands. Binding worn at spine and extremities, front hinge cracking (yet still solid), damage to front pastedown. Still, a very good copy with a lovely fore-edge painting and gauffered edges.
