    Description

[Fine Binding by Zaehnsdorf]. La Rochefoucault (Francois, Duc de). Les Maximes Suivies des Réflexions Diverses Publiées. Paris: [imprimé par D. Jouaust] Librairie Des Bibliophiles, 1892. 16mo in fours (6.5 x 4 inches; 165 x 102 mm). [4, prelims], XL, 290, [2] pages. Exquisitely bound by Zaehnsdorf in 1895 (signed and dated in gilt on the front turn-in and with blind stamp on rear doublure) in brown goatskin, the covers lavishly tooled in gilt in an all-over "fanfare" design of variously shaped compartments filled with leafy stems, small dots, and stars; minor edgewear. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments with similar motifs. Superb turn-ins with a gilt fillet, dog-tooth roll and leaves, red silk doublures and endpapers, all edges gilt. Internally clean, minor staining to endleaves. Inscribed in ink to a front fly-leaf "Christmas 1895" and in a seemingly different hand, "'Il est plus necessaire d'étudier les hommes que les livres.' - p. 183." With the booklabel of Taplow Court to rear free endpaper, with pencil shelf-marks "11-B-1." A near fine copy of a most pleasing Zaehnsdorf binding in the 'fanfare' style.

Taplow Court in Buckinghamshire was bought by the Grenfell family in 1852 and became home to William Grenfell. The house became a center for the "Souls," the aristocratic clique incorporating A.J. Balfour, George Curzon and various Wyndhams, Charterises, Tennants, Custs and Windsors. Other visitors included Henry Irving, Vita Sackville-West, H.G. Wells, Edith Warton, and Oscar Wilde.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
