[Fine Binding by Frieda Thiersch]. Ernst Collin, editor, and Jakob Krause-Bund. Deutsche Einbandkunst. Berlin: [Kunstdruckerei Gebr. Feyl], 1921. First edition. Number 16 of 20 copies (of a total edition of 2,000). With an autograph letter signed by Thiersch, in German and on her letterhead, dated "28. März 1922." Quarto. [92] pages. Full crushed brown morocco by Frieda Thiersch (stamp-signed in gilt to rear dentelle), in an austere, early, and expertly crafted binding typical of her work, with gilt ruled borders on covers, spine, and dentelles, spine lettered in gilt; spine a bit rubbed. Pale green endpapers, all edges gilt, two small bookplates to front pastedown; binding particularly tight, small, minor stain to rear pastedown. Internally clean and bright. Housed in a matching custom slipcase of green marbled boards with brown morocco trim matching book; worn, rubbed, and a bit stained. Overall, near fine.

Originally issued unbound, this copy includes an autograph letter signed by Thiersch to famed collector Paul Hirsch, for whom this book was bound. First studying with Charles McLeish of the Doves Bindery, the March 1922 date of this letter suggests this particular binding was one of Thiersch's first as an independent bookbinder. The letterhead gives her studio address as her former family home in Munich, which was subsequently bought by Willy Wiegand, co-founded of the Bremer Presse; Thiersch later became the bindery's manager and designed all Bremer Presse book bindings.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
