Daniel McKinnen, a British traveler, noted that although the Caicos Islands, then a part of The Bahamas, had the best soil and cotton was still a staple in 1803, on most of the southern islands cotton production had declined. Of Crooked Island, where the Loyalists had settled and established about 40 plantations and planted over 2,000 acres of cotton, Daniel McKinnen who toured the British West Indies and The Bahamas between 1802-1803, states: "I beheld some extensive fields originally planted with cotton, but which from the failure of crops were now abandoned, and had become covered with a luxuriant growth of indigenous shrubs and plants ... I found the plantations of Crooked Island for the most part ... ". Daniel McKinnen, who toured the West Indies in 1802-1803, also observed the slaves on Sundays and market days and was impressed by the amount of property they possessed: "The clothes in which they appear, and the property they display on these occasions, would induce one to believe that the rigors of slavery, on many estates, are not a little softened by the liberality and benevolence of the masters; and, indeed, notwithstanding the absolute and unlimited nature of their legitimate authority, a sentiment of honor amongst the planters protects the slave in the enjoyment of the little peculium he may acquire, as effectually as the most sacred laws; while some of the Negroes are perhaps richer than many peasants in the heart of Europe." pp. 68-69. A classic work. Slavery in the West Indies. West Indies, British. West Indies, British--History. West Indies, French--History. Bahamas.
