Description

[Featured Lot]. Robert Louis Stevenson. Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr Hyde. Authorized Edition. New York: [J. J. Little & Co. for] Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. Krown & Spellman retail: $1500. First American Edition, variant binding. 8vo. 17.8 x 11.8 cm. The sewing of the first gathering is between the first blank and the half-title, the second between the contents leaf and page [1], and the third between pages 8 & 9. The other sewings appear just before the alternate gathering marks so actually it a 16mo! (by sewing anyway). There is a gluing between pages 4 &5 which would match the sewing if that were replaced, so gathering [1] in this copy is probably 6 +8. Gathering #2-#3 is 16; 4-5 is 16; 6-7 is 16;8-[9] is 16. It also appears that the front paste-down is made-up of two pages pasted together which would match the first sewing and imply 2 blanks in the first gathering. [8],138,[2 blank], [4 ads.], [2 blank]p. Publisher's red cloth, gilt title on spine and cover, spine ends slightly chipped and frayed, corners bumped, spine sunned and leaning, top edge gilt; long pencil note on verso of dedication leaf on the moral of the book dated "East Hampton, 1886" which seems to correspond to an owner's name on the rear blank "East Hampton Long Island/ August 30th 1903 Chas. R. Steele/ Dunemere," foxing. Paper is laid and consistent throughout. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

More Information: "...a Faustian moral fable which takes the form of a tale of mystery and horror. It precedes Oscar Wilde"s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), which in some respects resembles it, by five years, and is the prototype of all stories of multiple personality, transformation and possession; in some respects it is also a tale of drug dependency." [Clute and Nicholls, The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction] Bleiler (1978),186. Reginald 13663. Beinecke 349.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
