[Featured Lot]. [Pre-Raphaelites]. Helen Rossetti Angeli. Manuscript Notebook of Childhood Memories. [together with:] Inventories of Books and Paintings. Circa 1950. Six full manuscript pages of Helen Rossetti Angeli's childhood reminiscences; together with a twenty-eight page inventory of books and paintings. Written in both pencil and ink in a dark grey hard cover "University" Manuscript Book. Binding rubbed, upper right corner of front cover detached and laid in; first page of the inventory lists coming loose, occasional smudges. Very good. From the William E. Fredeman Collection.

Helen Rossetti Angeli (1879-1969) was the third child of William Michael Rossetti (founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood) and Lucy Madox Brown (daughter of the painter Ford Madox Brown). She had an older brother and sister (Gabriel Arthur and Olivia Frances), as well as younger twin siblings (Mary Elizabeth and Michael Ford. Michael died in infancy.)

The reminiscences, apparently an unfinished beginning, make mentions of her aunt Christina (Christina Georgina Rossetti), brother Arthur, and sisters Olivia and Mary. "Michael I recall only in a dream." In these pages she mostly recounts her life with her father, writing that "I cannot recall a period of my youth when he was not my ideal of all that was kind and just and lovable." She tells of her mother's illness which lead to her eventual death in 1894. "I remember her very distinctly. She was thin and delicate and one of the most 'distinguished' looking women I ever saw.... She had great self-possession and self-assurance...a deep and & passionate devotion to her children."

The inventory pages list books and paintings to be sent to the Bodleian, the Ashmolean, and the Instituto Milano [?]; as well as those to be sold or stored in Rome and London.

A fascinating look into the home life of one of England's most prominent artistic and literary families.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
