    An Important Signed Association Copy
    of John Updike's First Book

[Featured Lot]. John Updike. SIGNED. The Carpentered Hen and other tame creatures. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, [1958]. First edition of the author's first book. Signed by Updike on the title-page. Octavo. [xii], 82, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth backstrip over light gray paper boards, Harper's symbol stamped in gilt on the front board, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket. Some rubbing and toning to jacket at spine, one tear to headcap of jacket, some ink markings (and light erasure markings) to front jacket panel, some rubbing and toning to jacket. Still, a very good copy. The Simon Michael Bessie copy (with his pencil ownership marking, "-Bessie-" in block printing on the front free endpaper). Bessie (1916-2008) was an important editor at Harper's, who, in 1959, left Harper's and co-founded Atheneum Publishing Company (he returned to Harper's in the 1970's). Bessie was an important editor (he was an early champion of John Cheever, and was good friends with Updike) who published many important novels. However, he also had some missteps, declining to publish Nabokov's Lolita and Puzo's The Godfather. This is an excellent association copy. From the collection of I.D. "Nash" Flores III.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
