A scholar, poet, writer and bibliophile, Melba Bennett was an avid reader of poetry, and was drawn to the works of Robinson Jeffers in the 1930s. Years of loyal assistance to the Jeffers family, having gained the confidence of both Una and Robinson Jeffers, led to her being invited to do his authorized biography - a work fueled by admiration and respect. Mrs. Bennett was awarded the California Commonwealth Club's Silver Medal in 1966 for the Jeffers Biography (her extensive Jeffers collection was recently donated by her family to Tor House in Carmel California. Tor House was built in 1919 as a residence for Jeffers and his family, and is now preserved and available for visits). An avid and astute collector of first editions and early illuminated manuscripts, Mrs. Bennett's family is now releasing these excellent books for others to collect and enjoy.
