    One of the Earliest Accounts of Iceland

Paris: Chez les Frères Levrault, 1802. First French edition (the true first Danish edition was published in 1772). Five octavo volumes and one quarto atlas volume. Text volumes: [2, blank], [4], iv, 444, [2, blank]; [2, blank], [iv], 434, [2, blank]; [2, blank], [iv], 400, [2, blank]; [2, blank], [iv], 451, [3, blank]; [2, blank], [iv], 419, [3, blank] pages. With all half-titles and blanks. Atlas volume: [ii], complete with sixty engraved plates of people, tools, and fauna, including one fold-out map. Text volumes bound in near contemporary full tree calf, covers ruled in blind, spines elaborately tooled in gilt, each volume with two red morocco gilt lettering labels, atlas bound in contemporary quarter brown morocco over handmade paper boards, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, with burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Some rubbing to bindings, ink notations and ownership ink stamps on half-title and title-page of each text volume, minor occasional thumbsoiling in text, binding of atlas volume has surface of leather worn away at joints, (although joints are not cracked), some wear to spine and binding, hinges cracked (yet still solid). Text and plates quite clean and bright. A fine set. From the library of H. F. Wriedt, with his nautical bookplate on the front pastedown in each volume. This edition has eight more plates than the original Dutch edition. This is one of the earliest accounts of Iceland, and contains the first scientific study of that island. Anker 379.
