    [Edwards of Halifax, presumed]. J. G. Zimmerman. Solitude. Or the effects of occasional retirement on the mind, the heart, general society... London: Vernor & Hood; J. Cuthell; J. Walker; et al., 1797. Fore-edge painting depicting "Rycot in Oxfordshire, [Seat of the] Earl of Abingdon," artist unknown. Octavo. 309, [21, index], [2, ads] pages. Illustrated with engravings and engraved title pages. Binding in the style of Edwards of Halifax: Etruscan calf decorated with inlaid diced leather panel, decorated in gilt and black, spine decorated in gilt and blind with five raised bands and black leather spine label stamped in gilt, single solid gilt roll to edges. Corners just bumped, moderate edgewear, joints starting, somewhat rubbed and worn. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; penciled label for fore-edge painting and note attributing the binding to Edwards of Halifax to front free endpaper recto, rear hinge weak, some wear. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; somewhat foxed, some offsetting, moderate text block edgewear. Ink autograph note detailing the history of Rycot and some provenance of the book [circa 1920s] laid in. Housed in green straight grain morocco slipcase, stamped in gilt; slipcase rubbed and worn and cracked. Very good with bright and finely-detailed, thought slightly worn, fore-edge painting.
