    Description

[Edgar Allan Poe]. "The Raven." By – Quarles. In The American Review: A Whig Journal. Vol. I. New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First appearance of the poem. Octavo (8.75 x 5.5 inches; 221 x 136 mm.). [2, title], iv, 656 pages. Portrait facing first page of text. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt with four raised bands; all text block edges trimmed. Binding very worn, with majority of edges exposed and corners starting to peek through leather; gilding at spine largely lacking; split starting at head of front joint. Endpapers a bit tanned from leather turn-ins and generally a bit soiled; evidence of labels removed from both front endpapers; extensive penciling to front free endpaper, with some small chips and holes; lacking rear free endpaper. Text bock foxed throughout, with occasional, small pencil annotations; edges slightly dulled and softened; a couple of gatherings toward rear slightly sprung due to split gutters. Good.
