First appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's immortal poem. Octavo (8.625 x 5.5 inches; 218 x 141 mm.). [ii], iv, 656 [2, blank] pages. Two portrait frontispieces and portrait plate beginning Number V. Contemporary half-calf over brown cloth-covered boards. Edges rubbed; soiling to covers; spine cracked; rear board darkened. Offsetting at endpapers; foxing throughout. Still, very good. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.

Published under the pseudonym "Quarles," "The Raven" (pages 143-145 in Volume I) brought Poe instant literary fame, quickly becoming one of the most discussed and recited poems in the country. The appearance in the American Review is the accepted first edition - the publication in the New York Mirror on January 29, 1845 was printed from advance sheets of the American Review. Volume I also includes Poe's short story "Some Words with a Mummy" (pages 363-370), and his poems "The Valley of Unrest" and "The City in the Sea" (pages 392-393).
