"This edition of the Bible is considered
the masterpiece of the Doves Press..."

[Doves Press]. The English Bible. Containing the Old Testament & the New translated out of the original tongues by special command of His Majesty King James the First and now reprinted with the text revised by a collation of its early and other principal editions and edited by the Late Rev. F.H. Scrivener M.A. LL.D. for the Syndics of the University Press Cambridge. Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1903-1905. One of 500 copies printed on handmade paper by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker. Five folio volumes. Printed in red and black, with initial letters designed by Edward Johnston. Original full limp vellum by The Doves Bindery with gilt titles on spines. Mild natural toning of the vellum, small corner bumps, minor crease along front joint of volume one; covers and text blocks lightly cockled; volume one with small edge tears to front free endpaper and following three blank leaves, two of which are separating slightly from the gutter; few smudges and unobtrusive stains; some volumes with light foxing to a few gatherings, as usual, a little heavier in the first few leaves of gathering "a" in volume one. A very nice copy of this five volume masterpiece from the Doves Press.

    More Information:

"This edition of the Bible is considered the masterpiece of the Doves Press....The type is a particularly crisp and faithful version of Jenson's fifteenth-century roman. It was cut in only one size, which was used in all of the half-hundred issues of the Press. When the Press was discontinued in 1916, the type and matrices were destroyed by Cobden-Sanderson to prevent their misuse." -Huntington Library, Great Books in Great Editions.

The distinctive red initials, executed by hand by Edward Johnston, are described by Ransom (Private Presses, p. 56) as "a pattern for all time of complexity reduced to the minimum of simplicity." - Clark Library, Kelmscott and Doves, pp. 90-92.

"The Doves Type was commissioned by Thomas Cobden-Sanderson as a bespoke typeface for the Doves Press, the London printing company he co-founded with Emery Walker in 1900. A modern take on a Venetian serif, it took two years to create and was used in all of the Press's publications, including books of verse by Shakespeare and Milton and the Doves Bible, which featured drop caps by Edward Johnston.

"After falling out with Walker, however - their partnership was legally dissolved in 1909, after the business encountered financial troubles - Cobden-Sanderson spent nine months tipping 2,600lb of it into the Thames in secret, ensuring that if he couldn't use it, nor could anyone else. Disguised by darkness, he made around 170 trips to the Hammersmith Bridge to tip small parcels into the water at night, the splashes concealed by passing traffic, before announcing that it had been "bequeathed' to the Thames." - Rachel Steven. "Recovering the Doves Type," Creative Review.
