[Dezallier d'Argenville]. The Theory and Practice of Gardening. London: Bernard Lintot, 1728. Second English-language edition, augmented and with a new treatise of flowers and orange-trees. Quarto (9.75 x 7.75 inches; 247 x 197 mm.). [viii], 297 (i.e. 299, pages 257-299 mis-numbered 255-297), [1, blank], [16] pages; title-page printed in red and black; illustrated with thirty-eight folding plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Contemporary calf, skillfully rebacked with original spine laid down; spine stamped and ruled in gilt, in six compartments, with gilt-lettered red morocco label; page edges sprinkled red; later endpapers, flyleaf at rear. Binding lightly crazed with some occasional minor scuffs or chips, particularly along the board edges; a few minor cracks to the original spine, very minor loss of leather; corners bumped. Text block very slightly cockled along the fore-edge; top edge dust soiled; recent bookseller catalog description pasted to front endpaper; hint of marginal foxing throughout. Very good. Originally published in 1709 in Paris and first translated into English by John James in 1712. ESTC T118205.
