First edition, one of 550 unnumbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum. "This is No. 910 of the Cosway Bindings Invented by J. H. Stonehouse, with Miniatures... by Miss Curie" (from the inserted limitation page signed by Stonehouse and Currie). Octavo (8.75 x 6 inches; 222 x 150 mm.). [2], xiv, [1]-216 pages. With twenty-five full-page plates inserted throughout, and seventy-two intertextual illustrations. Bound by Riviere and Son, most likely for Henry Sotheran Ltd. in brown levant morocco, with rectangular miniature portrait of an older Sir Walter Scott and his dog on the front cover, painted in full color. Front board paneled in an elaborate thistle motif in gilt, boards decoratively triple-ruled in gilt with floral cornerpieces, spine tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, green watered silk doublures and liners, top edge gilt, others rough-cut. The fore-edge of the front board is stamped "Cosway Binding" in gilt, and the fore-edge of the rear board is stamped "Invented by J. H. Stonehouse." The rear doublure is stamped in gilt, "Miniatures / C. B. Currie." Spine toned and slightly worn. Housed in felt-lined cloth slipcase with finger-hole for ease of removing the book (some wear and soiling to slipcase). Near fine.
