London: Printed by MacDonald and Son... For Thomas Lovewell & Co., 1814. First edition, "This is No. 916 of the Cosway Bindings Invented by J. H. Stonehouse, with Miniatures... by Miss Curie" (from the inserted limitation page signed by Stonehouse and Currie). Octavo, two volumes bound in one (8.75 x 5.25 inches; 222 x 128 mm.). xii, [1]-273, [1, blank]; viii, [1]-264 pages. Bound by Riviere and Son for Henry Sotheran Ltd. in burgundy levant morocco, with oval miniature portrait of an older Lord Nelson on the front cover, and an oval miniature portrait of the younger Nelson on the rear cover. Both miniatures are painted in full color. Boards elaborately stamped in gilt in an oval floral paneled motif, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, green watered silk doublures and liners, top edge gilt, others rough-cut. The fore-edge of the front board is stamped "Cosway Binding" in gilt, and the fore-edge of the rear board is stamped "Invented by J. H. Stonehouse." The rear doublure is stamped in gilt, "Miniatures / C. B. Currie." Spine a bit toned, with some rubbing and minor soiling. Housed in felt-lined cloth slipcase with finger-hole for ease of removing the book (some sunning and soiling to slipcase). Fine.
