Vecillio's Magnificent Work on Costume - Illustrated with More Than 400 Woodcut Designs After Titian

[Costumes]. Cesare Vecillio. De gli Habiti Antichi et Moderni de Diverse Parti del Mondo, Libri Due. Venice: Presso Damian Zenaro, 1590. First edition. Thick octavo. [24], 499 folios. Fine woodcut border to title-page and more than 400 woodcut engravings of costumes from designs by Titian within ornamental woodcut borders. Finely bound in eighteenth-century full maroon crushed levant morocco, boards double-ruled in gilt with gilt floral cornerpieces with initials of Andre Massena, Prince of Essling, Duke of Rivoli (Napoleon's greatest general). With his gilt central coat-of-arms, spine elaborately tooled with Massena's initials and floral motifs in gilt and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Spine a bit darkened, some rubbing and a few faint spots on binding, some minor wear to spine and corners, hinges starting, front free endpaper loose. Ownership and gift inscriptions of Benjamin Fillon, a French numismatist and archaeologist on the first binder's blank. A beautiful, very clean copy of this lovely work, invaluable to artists. From the collection of a gentleman of New York.
