In the Original Boards

[Continental Congress]. Journals of Congress. Containing Their Proceedings [from September 5, 1774, to November 3, 1788]. Philadelphia: From Folwell's Press, 1800-1801. First collected edition, one of only 400 copies printed. Thirteen octavo volumes, complete. Publisher's original boards, expertly rebacked to style in modern paper spines and printed labels. Mostly uncut and unopened. Volume IX with the Journal of the Committee of the States in the rear, which is most often absent. Some light wear and rubbing to boards. Some moderate intermittent foxing in texts, some occasional marginal dampstaining in text. Volume V has professional repairs to the front free endpaper and the corner of the title-page (not affecting text). Some ink numbers and markings to rear free endpapers, volumes I through III with a few early bookseller's notes or markings to front pastedowns. Textblocks fresh and crisp, generally near fine, in nice restored bindings. Chemised in three large quarter brown morocco clamshell cases.

The journals provide valuable insight to the workings and achievements of the First Continental Congress and the Second Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War period; also the Congress of the Confederation, and the adoption of the current Constitution of the United States. Contained herein are early printings of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. It also contains one of the earliest accounts of Shay's Rebellion. Before this comprehensive set was published, congressional proceedings were only published in annual volumes by various printers; these became increasingly difficult for members of Congress to get them. Congress solved this problem by commissioning Richard Folwell to print 400 sets. "The Journals of the Congress formed the only central record of the colonies and the subsequent states." (Tannenbaum, 12). Evans 38750. Sabin 15545.
