[Continental Congress]. Journal of the Proceedings of the Congress, Held at Philadelphia, September 5, 1774. Philadelphia: William and Thomas Bradford, 1774. First edition, first issue without the 12-page Petition to the King. Octavo. (2), [132] pages; woodcut device on title page, lacking half-title, final leaf [Q4] supplied. Disbound, edges untrimmed; a bit toned, some scattered foxing and staining throughout, foxing more moderate to later leaves, minor chipping, small losses to title page fore-edge corners but not affecting text, ink ownerships to title page leaf (recto and verso), ink annotations to right margin of page [1], leaf [H4] with an open tear in lower margin (approximately 11 x 3 mm) but not affecting text, leaf [I3] with a tear in the margin (approximately 1.75 inches; 44 mm) with some loss but not affecting text. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell with gilt lettered leather spine labels, near fine. A very good example of the rare first issue of the records of the first Continental Congress.

    J. H. Trumbull, noted in Ford, states that this printing constitutes, "the rare original edition, with the emblematical device on the title, twelve hands sustaining a column resting on Magna Charta and surmounted by the cap of Liberty."

Evans 13737; Howes J-263; Ford 39 listing the second issue and notes, "some copies were issued before pp. 133-144 were printed;" Sabin 15542 listing only the second issue.
