[Confederate Texas] Imprint: Resolutions of the Texas Brigade. B. S. Fitzgerald, Chairman Camp Texas Brigade, January 24th, 1865. 8vo. leaflet, 6.25" x 9.75", 4 pages. At top of first page is a faint rubberstamp of the "Record Division, Rebel Archives." With toning heavier at margins. Weakness and separation (though not complete) along the central vertical fold.

Written and printed during the last desperate months of the War Between the States, this imprint's language is a defiant oath of loyalty to the valor of Robert E. Lee and the righteous leadership of Jefferson Davis. In very small part:

"We . . . make known to our fellow soldiers, to our country, the enemy, and to the world, our purpose and determination to maintain, at all hazards, and to the last extremity, the rights and liberties which a merciful God has been pleased to bestow upon us, and even to contend for a perpetual separation from the hated and despised foe, who have murdered our grey-haired fathers, insulted our women and children, and turned out thousands of helpless families to starve. . . . Resolved 5th. That in President Davis, the wise, patriotic, good Chief Magistrate of the Confederate States, we repose the most perfect confidence and respect. . . . Resolved 6th. That for Gen. Robert E. Lee, the great soldier, father and friend of his army, we have the love and veneration that dutiful children owe their father."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
