    Perry's Expedition to Japan

[Commodore M[atthew] C[albraith] Perry]. Francis L. Hawks. Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, Performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854 ...Washington: Beverley Tucker and A. O. P. Nicholson, 1856. First edition, mixed House (volume II) and Senate issue (volumes I and III). Three quarto volumes. Complete with 158 inserted lithographs, engravings, charts and maps (including 23 hand-colored natural history plates). Lacks the suppressed "Public Bath at Simoda," not called-for in list of illustrations, as is most common. With numerous wood-engravings throughout. Bound in contemporary full calf, boards decoratively ruled in black. All volumes uniformly rebacked to style in modern brown calf, spines numbered in gilt, gilt black morocco lettering labels, new endleaves. Some wear and soiling to original boards, some wear and a few short tears and mild foxing in text. Some larger fold-out maps with tears. Each volume with warm presentation to a Lt. Richard R. Pleasants from his father in memory of the younger Pleasnts' World War II service aboard the U. S. S. Mississippi. Still, a good set. Sabin 30968.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
