A Gorgeous Collection of Hand-Colored Aquatints

[Color-Plate Book]. Antoine-François Sergent-Marceau. Portraits des Grands Hommes, Femmes Illustres, et Sujets Mémorables de France, graves et imprimée en Coleurs. Paris: Chez Blin, [n.d., ca. 1789-1792]. First edition of this magnificent color-plate book. Quarto. Approximately 13.5 x 9.75 inches. Complete with engraved tinted title-page, dedication leaf, and 192 hand-colored aquatint plates (by Sergent, Ridé, Morret, and others), engraved text on plates. Contemporary full brown crushed morocco, boards triple-ruled in gilt, paneled in gilt with gilt floral cornerpieces, spine elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges uncut. Joints have had some repair, yet cracking still evident, some light wear and soiling to binding, hinges subtly reinforced with cloth, some light intermittent foxing to some plates, yet, in general, the interior is quite clean. A fine copy with beautiful hand-colored plates.

    More Information:

One of the earliest hand-colored copperplate books. Not only are there portraits of famous French men and women, there are some plates depicting their exploits. This copy has the allegorical vignette about the American Revolution (often lacking). "This extraordinary work of colour printing, issued in Paris by Blin, included 192 aquatint plates and was published in 48 parts. It carried out a consistent scheme of oval portraiture with engraved description and arms below, followed by a notable episode from the life of that hero or heroine of France, and two columns of the half-page in engraved italic to describe the historical event. Thus it was a book of aquatint and engraving, with no type setting. It is, as colour-printing, an harmonious and excellent achievement." [Franklin]. Cohen de Ricci 951. Franklin p. 53.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
