Description

One of Only Five Copies with Ten Original, Hand-Colored Etchings by Clara Tice

[Clara Tice, illustrator]. Voltaire. Candide or All for the Best. New York: The Bennett Libraries, Inc., 1927. First edition, one of only five copies (stated on spine of binding). This copy with ten hand-colored original etchings on vellum as well as hand-colored plates of the etchings inserted throughout, the first etching signed by Tice. Additionally, this copy has an extra original etching on Vellum facing page 30 (corresponding with "What happened to Cunegonda, Candide, the grand inquisitor, and the Jew"). Octavo. Two parts in one volume. [ii], 7 [sic]-[189], [1, blank] pages. Laid-in is an etched invitation for an exhibition of Tice's work. Bound for the publisher in contemporary full red levant morocco, covers elaborately paneled (in four quadrants) in gilt, with gilt floral cornerpieces and central floral motifs, spine ruled, paneled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, brown moiré silk doublures and liners, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine a bit darkened, joints and corners worn, front hinge cracking, some toning in text, several pages roughly opened. Overall, a very good copy. The text is the most complete English translation, containing the second part, which is missing from many translations.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
