Description

[Charlotte Guillard]. [Pope Gregory I (Saint Gregory the Great)]. In hoc volumine contenta, Divi Gregorii P[ri]mi In beatum Job moralis expositionis libri xxxv... Paris: Chevallon: 1523.

    More Information:

Folio. [22], 450, [8] leaves. Title page in red and black, decorative woodcut border, printer's device of Berthold Rembolt on title page, smaller printer's device of Claude Chevallon on verso of final leaf, large historiated and decorated initials. Modern antique calf, five raised spine bands with gilt stamped title and devices in compartments, endpapers refreshed. Small holes and trails from biopredation in varying number with differing degrees of effect to text, more concentrated in front and back; title page chipped and partially repaired, small chip in fore-edge of first numbered leaf, tear in inner margin of leaf 421, few pages reinforced along gutter, light browning, occasional holograph notes, lines, and marks to sides of text, last few pages frayed with paper loss in the lower right corner, otherwise a good copy in a lovely binding. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

Charlotte Guillard, widow of the printer Berthold Rembolt, married the bookseller Claude Chevallon in 1520 or 1521. Chevallon soon began publishing at the Soleil d'Or under Rembolt's printer's mark.

As she began to work with her new husband, Guillard's name (which had been included after Rembolt's death) disappeared from the imprint, replaced by Chevallon's.

For a fascinating example of this "changing of the guard" see the 1523 edition of Pope Gregory I's In hoc volumine contenta, Divi Gregorii Primi In beatum Job moralis expositionis libri xxxv ..., where the printer's device of Berthold Rembolt (with lions) appears on the title page and the smaller printer's device of Claude Chevallon (with horses, a play on his own name, "cheval" meaning horse) appears on the verso of the final leaf.
