Paris: Chez Antoine Dezallier, 1696, 1700. First edition. Two folio volumes. Approximately 16.5 x 10.25 inches. [viii], [102]; [2, blank], [iv], 102, [1, Extrait du Privilege du Roy], [1, blank] pages. With engraved title-pages, and with 103 full-page engraved portraits by Edelinck, Lubin and Duflos inserted throughout. This set includes the three portraits and text pages normally suppressed from this set: Arnauld, Pascal, and Thomasson. Bound in contemporary full burgundy crushed levant morocco, covers triple-ruled in gilt, gilt central armorial stamp of Cardinal de Fleury on boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, six raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, pink silk endleaves. Spines a bit darkened, some mild wear to binding, Warenghien bookplate in volume I, ownership signature (Savary) on first blank in volume II; bookplate by Petrus de Maridat (hand-colored) affixed to page [vii] and woodcut portrait affixed to page [viii] in volume I (no loss of text). An excellent set. Some of the subjects featured include Richelieu, Colbert, Sully, Molière, Descartes, Pascal (not usually found), et al. This is one of the finest illustrated publications of early seventeenth-century France.

    More Information:

    Its compiler, Charles Perrault would become famous as the author of classic children's tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Puss-in-Boots, and others. Cardinal Andre-Hercule de Fleury (1653-1743) was the chaplain to Louis XIV and the tutor to Louis XV; de Fleury was chief minister of state under Louis XV, from 1726 until his death, during which he virtually governed France.
