    A Vast Production Art Archive

[Carl Sagan, association]. Jon Lomberg. Archive of Production Artwork for Carl Sagan's Cosmos. [No place: no publisher, circa late 1970s to 1981]. Exhaustive archive of nearly 150 individual items from the Chief Artist of the pioneering television mini-series. Including sixty-two original paintings, drawings and sketches; forty-seven one-of-a-kind prints of special effects paintings; thirteen storyboards with dozens of drawings; approximately twenty documents or notes related to production; four retouched photographs; production photos and a stereoscopic viewer with slides testing the dimensionality of the "Milky Way Approach" sequence. Nearly every painting or illustration, as well as each of the prints, is signed by Lomberg. Artwork executed in acrylics, and sketches in ink or pencil, on board, acetate or paper ranging in size, from approximately 9.5 x 11 inches to 15 x 20 inches. Prints measure roughly 11 x 17 inches. Sizes of photos and documents vary. Generally, items are near fine.

Jon Lomberg and Carl Sagan began their collaborative relationship in 1972. For Sagan, Lomberg produced design work on several books, including The Cosmic Connection (1972), Broca's Brain (1979), Cosmos (1980) and Contact (1985), as well as the Cosmos mini-series and the unproduced Nucleus. He also contributed to the Voyager Golden Record and designed the logo for the Planetary Society. His many awards include Graphic Design Magazine DESI Award for "Nuclear Winter" artwork for Parade Magazine (1983), the American Association for the Advancement of Science Best Children's Science book (1996), and, the asteroid 6446 1990QL was officially renamed to "Asteroid Lomberg" by the International Astronomical Union in 1998.

Diverse in content, the original artwork depicts numerous subjects. Highlights include a painting of the Viking Lander of the Mars surface (measuring approximately 15 x 20 inches), the original design sketch of "The Cosmic Calendar" (marker on paper, approximately 9 x 12 inches), alternate designs for the Cosmos logo and for the "Spaceship of the Imagination," and beautifully rendered depictions of the structure of DNA and various types of galaxies and cosmic phenomena. The forty-seven prints illustrate some of the most famous ideas or sequences in the series, including "The Encyclopedia Galactica," "The Great Chain of Being" (representing Sagan's guiding ethos of the series, that we are all connected to entirety of the cosmos), the computer-generated "4 Billion Years of Evolution in 40 Seconds" animation and many more. Additionally, there is a six-page original typescript by Donald Goldsmith, who provided Lomberg with technical information about the density wave theory of spiral structure in galaxies, information that helped shape episode seven, "The Backbone of Night;" The Music of Cosmos, vinyl soundtrack signed by Lomberg; and correspondence from the Emmy Committee to Lomberg, regarding his Primetime Emmy Award, received in 1981, for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Creative Technical Crafts. Perhaps of the greatest interest of any item is an original drawing by Carl Sagan of two terms of the Drake Equation, ink on graph paper, approximately 10 x 8 inches. Material from virtually every episode from the series is included, with the first two episodes, "The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean," and "One Voice in the Cosmic Fugue", being particularly well represented, including an additional twenty-five original full-color gouache storyboards for the DNA sequence of "One Voice in the Cosmic Fugue" by Frank Armitage, on boards measuring approximately 9 x 7 inches.
