Single quarto volume (9.25 x 7.25 inches). All treatises complete. Contemporary half brown calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine ruled in gilt, gilt-lettered burgundy morocco label, later manuscript paper label ("Tea / Coffee"). Binding quite worn and chipped, boards nearly detached, text somewhat toned with some light intermittent foxing, Tea-Tree plate has some marginal tears. Generally a very good collection, with one of the most important marine medical treatises of the eighteenth century.

Pringle's Discourse Upon Some Late Improvements... is one of the most important of all the works related to Cook's voyages. It contains not only Pringle's important discourse, but Cook's landmark paper on the successful steps he took to preserve the health of the crew of the Resolution (during his second voyage), making this paper one of the most vital papers in the early history of English exploration. "Following the scurvy-preventing suggestions of James Lind, Cook lost only one man to disease on his second voyage from 1768-1771." (Garrison-Morton). Another significant treatise is Ellis' Historical Account of Coffee, one of the most important early treatises on coffee. Ellis (1710-1776) spent most of his life as a merchant in the West Indies, and he attempted to promote coffee through Europe. He introduced the tea tree to England around 1768. Wellcome III 504. Blake p.268. Maclean p.90. Nissen 1584, 1182. Sabin 22317. Garrison-Morton 2156 and 3714; Norman 508.
