    Description

The First Twelve Fascicles of Oeder's
    Massive Flora Danica, with Nearly
    700 Hand-Colored Botanical Plates

[Botany]. George Christian Oeder and Othone Friderico Müller. Icones Plantarum Spinte Nascentium in Regnis Daniae et Norvegiae... Florae Danicae Nominae Inscriptum... Hafniae [Copenhagen]: Claudius Philbertus and Mart. Halligeri, 1766, 1770, 1777. First edition of the first twelve fascicles of this enormous European botanical (eventually fifty-one fascicles were published with 3,240 plates). Four folio volumes. Approximately 14.5 x 9 inches. With 699 (out of a total of 720) hand-colored botanical plates (all missing plates are in volume IV - apparently this volume had been intended to be sold as individual plates, with pencil prices still visible). Fourteen plates in volume IV are loose (with ragged trimming to left margins). Uniformly bound in contemporary full brown calf, boards decoratively ruled in gilt with gilt cornerpieces, spines elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, six raised bands, red and green gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges, marbled endleaves. Bindings somewhat worn and soiled, with most joints starting (volume IV joints are cracked), some minor occasional thumbsoiling in otherwise bright and clean plates. Plate 250 has a small marginal tear at bottom, plate 597 has a small hole not affecting image, and plate 654 (a loose plate) has a deep crease, not affecting image. Bookplates. Overall, a very good, though not complete, set. Colors quite vibrant.
This ambitious European botanical was published over a 125-year period. It covers, in great detail, the plants of Norway, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, portions of Northern Germany, and some Swedish flora.
    Dunthorne 218. Nissen BBI 2249.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
