    Bishop's 1578 Version of the Holy Bible

    [Bible]. The Holy Byble, conteynyng the olde Testament, and the Newe. London: Christopher Barker, 1578. [26] leaves of prefatory text including Preface, Prologue and calendars detailing scripture passages for holy days, Sunday services and other days of the week, 102, 150, 156, 102, 130 leaves plus [2] leaves comprising "A Table to finde the Epistles and Gospels read in the Churche of Englande", 13 x 8 inches. Nineteenth-century full calf with embossed designs on front and rear cover, spine with six compartments, rebound in 20th century with original spine laid down, corners bent, worn at edges, repairs to a number of leaves with early filmoplast tape that shows some yellowing, several leaves missing significant portion of text including leaf 29 from Psalmes, leaf 73 containing "The Story of Bel and the Dragon" found after the book of Baruch and leaf 3 from The Gospel of Saint Matthewe. Otherwise contents in very clean condition with little soiling, stains, or foxing. Bishops' version being an early small folio produced by the Church of England to correct or respond to the thorough Calvinism of the Geneva Bible and other perceived shortcomings of the Great Bible. Bound into this copy is The Lyues of Holy Sainetes... by John Marbeck published in 1574.
