    Description

[Bible in Latin]. [Mainz: Johann Gutenberg and Johann Fust, ca. 1450-1455]. A single folio leaf on unwatermarked paper from the first volume of the Gutenberg Bible, f. [193] containing the Prologue of I Chronicles and the beginning of I Chronicles. In Edward A. Newton, "A Noble Fragment: Being a Leaf of the Gutenberg Bible." With a Bibliographical Essay by Edward A. Newton. New York: Gabriel Wells, 1921. Full blind-stamped black morocco by Stikeman & Co. (stamp-signed in gilt), lettered in gilt; corner's rubbed, joints cracking but holding, upper portion of spine with some loss.

A single Gutenberg Bible leaf, 42 lines, double column, type 1:140G. Rubricated in red, with headlines alternating in red and blue, a chapter number, and two large initial letters (supplied, as is often the case) in red and blue. Leaf measures 15 3/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 391 x 284 mm. Minor foxing, two small wormholes in the left margin (not affecting text) now reinforced by the tipping-in of this leaf. Two clean, closed tears, one just touching rubricated "S" (22 mm) and another in margin (17 mm). A very good example of "the first and in many ways the greatest of all printed books" (PMM).

A "Noble Fragment" from the imperfect copy purchased at auction in 1920 by Joseph Sabin, sold to bookseller Gabriel Wells, who then issued a leaf book with single leaves of the bible, along with A. Edward Newton's essay.

    BCM I, p. 17; Goff B-526; Hain *3031; GW 4201; PMM 1.
