[Bible in English]. [Overland Mail Company Bible]. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Translated Out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. New York: American Bible Society, 1859. 40th edition. Thick pocket-sized volume, bound in eights (5.5 x 3.5 inches; 140 x 89 mm). [1-2], 974, [975-976], 977-1278 double-columned pages. In original boards and restored spine, with original black label; boards are blind-stamped, with "Station Overland Mail Company. For Use of Travellers and Station Agents" stamped vertically in gilt on front cover. Binding has very slight wear, but very good condition. Internally very sound, with light dampstaining on the edges of the last few pages. Ownership signature of former owner on front pastedown and on one of the front flyleaves. Postcard that comes with bible states that the volume was found "in the basement of the Episcopal Church, Placerville (Built in 1865-66)." Placerville is in California. Overall, condition is very good.This appears to be a copy of a successor to the "Pony Express" Bibles published in the U.S. in the 1850s. The Pony Express route that the riders used went through the Territories of Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas sharing relay stations with the Butterfield Overland Mail Company stagecoach line. The Overland Mail Company eventually did take over the western portion of the Pony Express route that went to Sacramento, California, when the Pony Express firm was dissolved in 1861. The Pony Express route went through what are now the states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. The Overland Mail Company station operators likely had copies of the American Bible Society's 1859 edition of the Bible similar to the 1858 Pony Express Bible.
