Extra-Illustrated with Forty Proof Etchings and Seven Drawings by Bernhardt Wall Laid In

[Bernhardt Wall]. Francis J. Weber. Following Bernhardt Wall. Austin: The Book Club of Texas, 1994.

First edition, and number 1 of 195 limited edition copies signed by Weber on the limitation page. Large octavo. With photographic frontispiece of Wall, nine tipped-in or pasted-in etched samples or reproductions of his work (including a signed etching affixed to page 1), and five beautiful photogravure reproductions of Wall's etchings.

Publisher's dark gray cloth over fine light gray paper boards with paper title label affixed to the upper cover. In the original paper dust jacket with paper title label affixed to the spine. Housed in the original issue matching slipcase. As new condition.

The seven original drawings include Wall's interpretations of presidents Calvin Coolidge, William Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover, a young Albert Einstein (dated 4-27-21), Admiral Sigsbee, Josephus Daniels (Secretary of the Navy under Wilson), and a rare self-portrait, executed on the verso of his own Lime Rock Art Association stationery.

The forty proof etchings include ten signed by Wall. Of the signed etchings, there is one of Wall's dog, Judy; a drum major in full dress; a fine portrait of Admiral Sigsbee; a striking portrait of Theodore Roosevelt; a large etching of a figure who appears to be Abraham Lincoln reading for the bar, and more. The unsigned etchings feature a diverse group of illustrations, including: contemporary views of New York City; bookplates; a title page and advertisement for Wall's Etched Monthly; a handful of other title pages; a captivating scene featuring a military parade review; a full-page advertisement featuring contemporary booksellers such as Harry Marks and Brentano's; the San Jacinto Memorial; famed child star and Hollywood legend, Jackie Coogan; an etching of a group of profiles featuring Edwin Markham; a Native American in headdress; Generalissimo Ferdinand Foch; a lovely view of Vera Bloom; a character sketch of Victor Kiraly; a stunning scene of a woman reading near a window; a limitation page for Windjammers signed in pencil by the Gleasons, and many more. A good number of these etchings relate to and add heft to particular chapters in the book. Light even toning to some etchings, but overall, they are in excellent condition. These extra-illustrated items represent some of Bernhardt Wall's best work, and this assemblage of his artistry stands as a unique record of Wall's lasting contribution to twentieth-century book arts.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
