[Aulus Gellius]. Auli Gellii Luculentissimi Scriptoris Noctes Atticae. Lyon: Gryphius, 1532.

    More Information:

A good source of many points of Classical information not found elsewhere.

Small octavo. [76], [2, blank], [556] pages. Bound to style in seventeenth-century full Italian vellum over boards, spine lettered in gilt. Spine a bit darkened, some rubbing, light bumping, and mild soiling to binding, some inoffensive neat ink markings to front endleaves, evidence of bookseller's description removal from front free endpaper. Minor marginal worm damage to a few leaves, some minor creasing in text. With the armorial bookplate of Dr. George Dowdeswell. Overall, good.

"Aulus Gellius, a Roman grammarian in the Age of Marcus Antonius, about 130 A.D. He published a work which he called Noctes Attica, because he composed it at Athens during the long nights of winter. It is a collection of incongruous matter, which contains many fragments from the ancient writers, and often serves to explain antique monuments. It was originally composed for the improvement of his children, and abounds with many grammatical remarks." (Lempriere's Dictionary) In this work, Gellius quotes many Classical scholars now lost to time; as such, this title is an excellent source of information not found elsewhere.

    Lempriere, p. 208.
