    Description

The Beautiful, Hand-Colored Atlas, Descriptio Orbis Antiqui, by Johann David Koehler.

[Atlases]. Jo. Davide Koelero [Johann David Koehler]. Descriptio Orbis Antiqui in XLIV Tabulis exhibita. Nuremberg: Homann Family, [n.d., ca. 1760]. Later reprint of the original 1720 edition published by Christoph Weigel (the Homanns bought the original copperplates some years after Weigel's atlas appeared and re-issued it with their imprint). Folio. Approximately 15.5 x 10 inches. Engraved title-page, engraved index, and forty-four double-page hand-colored maps and views (complete). All leaves and plates mounted on stubs. This edition is virtually identical to Weigel's. Most maps have engraved vignettes or examples of coinage from the countries depicted. Bound in near contemporary half mottled calf over patterned paper boards, spine ruled and tooled in gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label on front board. Spine chipped at tailcap, some wear to binding, especially at edges and corners, some soiling to front board, bookplate and front pastedown and ink stamp in lower corner of title-page, contemporary ownership inscription "Bibliothecae Septiensis Scholar Ciarum" neatly written in ink near the bottom margin of the index page. Still, a fine copy with the plates bright and clean.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
