First French edition, taken from Carey & Lea's American Atlas (the first American atlas to be reprinted in Europe). Large folio. Approximately 21.5 x 13.5 inches. Unpaginated. With fifty-five (of sixty-three) hand-colored maps and tables. All maps and text leaves (except for the first three leaves) are double-page. With several uncolored text leaves. All leaves mounted onto stubs. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine stamped in gilt. Calf cornerpieces missing, binding heavily worn (especially at spine), title-page damaged (accompanied by simple restoration,) corners creased and bumped, several gutters cracking, a few leaves reinforced onto their stubs with later tape, some light foxing. Overall, fair.
    Each of the maps is surrounded by text describing the economic, social and historical information on its subject. Maps are of the United States, South America, and the West Indies.
