First Rackham edition, limited to 1,150 copies, of which this is number 390, and signed by the illustrator. Two quarto volumes. [4, blank], ix, [x], 159, [160], [4, blank] pages; ix, [x], 181, [182], [1, blank], [1, colophon]. Thirty-four and thirty illustrations mounted. Later blue half-morocco over blue cloth covered boards, raised bands and gilt lettering on spine. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Backstrips faintly dulled; lower corners softly bumped. Pages faintly foxed. Near fine.

    More Information: "The Wagner illustrations that Rackham had been working on and which appeared in two parts in 1910 and 1911 as The Rhinegold and the Valkyrie and Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods... represented an important achievement for him... The drawings for Wagner gave him above all a theme - the Norse Myths - which appealed to his nordic sympathies, and with it a series of noble motives" (Hudson, Arthur Rackham: His Life and Work, p. 92).
