The Majestic Signed Limited Edition of Rackham's Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

[Arthur Rackham, illustrator]. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. [Mrs. Edgar Lucas, translator]. The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. London: Constable & Co., 1909. First edition with Rackham illustrations. Octavo. xv, 325 pages. Limited edition, number 276 of 750 copies signed by Rackham. Illustrated with fifty-five drawings in black and white and forty full-page color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on white paper with captioned tissue guards. Publisher's full vellum over boards. Gilt lettering and pictorial vignettes to top board and spine. Yellow silk ties lacking. Binding soiled and abraded in places, and with natural darkening to the vellum. Some scuffs and scrapes and one corner just worn through. Intermittent light browning and foxing, a few spots of soiling to the sheets. One plate with the very tip of a bottom corner with a bit of slight loss, else still a very bright copy. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Despite the flaws mentioned, still a very good copy. David Blamires, Telling Tales, 174. Latimore and Haskell, 35.

    More Information:

"Rackham is often thought of as a master of the grotesque, but such pictures should be set alongside such delicate portraits as the two illustrations for 'The Goosegirl' to keep them in proportion. But it is the dangerous and suspenseful episodes in fairytales that clamor to be illustrated, and Rackham provides them in plenty" (Blamires).
