[Anti-Slavery]. William I. Bowditch. Slavery and the Constitution. Boston: Robert F. Wallcut, 1849. First edition. Octavo. [iv], 1-156 pages. In the original publisher's green printed wrappers. Spine chipped, wrappers nearly detached, wrappers soiled and foxed, with some edgewear. Some occasional foxing, edgewear in text. A very good copy of this rare and fragile item. Bowditch argues that, although the Constitution allows for slavery, pro-slavery laws are invalid due to their immorality. As a prominent member of the Underground Railroad, he would shelter escaped slaves in his home in Massachusetts (including, famously, Ellen and William Craft, who posed as a white man and his servant), as well as other "outlaws," such as the son of abolitionist John Brown, who went into hiding after his father's execution. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
