[Alexander Pope]. The Iliad of Homer. Translated by Mr. Pope. London: Printed by W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintott, 1715-1720. First edition, ordinary folio issue. Six folio volumes (approximately 11 x 7.5 inches). Bound without half-titles and portrait frontispiece. Siege of Troy and Shield of Achilles fold-out plates, folding map of Greece, double-page plate of antiquities and List of Subscribers all present. Privilege leaves present in each volume. Bound in later full brown calf, boards paneled in blind, spines with burgundy and black gilt morocco lettering labels. Bindings somewhat worn to varying degrees (volume II seems to be the worst and is lacking the labels), some hinges and joints starting, endleaves soiled, some occasional foxing or soiling in text (a few leaves dampstained). Ownership signatures in volume I (Abraham T. Lowe and Henr. Williams, jun). In volume I is a mounted half-sheet in an unknown hand quoting Dr. Johnson about the subscription price of this set (it is mounted on the blank page opposite the title-page). On the title-page in an unknown hand is the curious note: "First Edition; exceedingly rare, and supposed to be the only copy in America." Overall, a good set of this important work. Samuel Johnson referred to Pope's translation of the The Iliad as the greatest ever produced in English or any other language.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
