    Description

[Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay]. The Federalist, on the New Constitution. By Publius. Written in 1788. To Which is Added, Pacificus, on the Proclamation of Neutrality. Written in 1793. Likewise, the Federal Constitution, with all the Amendments, Revised and Corrected. New York: Printed and sold by George F. Hopkins, 1802. Second U. S. edition (and second in English), third overall. Two volumes. Octavo in fours (8.25 x 5 inches; 210 x 218 mm.). viii, 270, 263-317, [1, erratum] (note: two pages each numbered "167" and "168"); v, [1, blank], [2, publisher's ad and blank], 351, [1, blank] pages. Tail-piece at end of text in second volume. Contemporary calf with red leather spine label stamped in gilt; all text block edges trimmed. Calf generally a bit worn, particularly at spine ends and along board edges, with some minor staining to boards; spines darkened just a shade, with hairline cracking along surface of calf; both front joints fully or mostly split, but still sound. Mild to moderate discoloration at edges of endpapers from offsetting of leather turn-ins; previous owner book labels to front endpapers; residue from red wax at front pastedown of first volume; front free endpaper of first volume coming detached; front hinge of first volume and rear hinge of second cracked, but still sound; second volume endpapers damp-stained. General soft dulling to text blocks, particularly at text block edges; previous owner inked annotations to first several leaves of each volume, including listing the authors' initials next to each number in the tables of contents; occasional mild, marginal spotting and soiling scattered throughout interior. Very good. The first edition to identify Hamilton, Madison, and Jay as the original authors (attribution for individual essays would follow in the Gideon edition of 1818), and the last to be issued during Hamilton's life. Sabin 23981; Howes H-114 ("Most famous and influential American political work.")

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
