    More Information:

[Albrecht Dürer, illustrator]. Collection of Seven Woodcuts from Sebastian Brant's Stultifera Navis ["Ship of Fools"]. [Basel: Johann Bergmann, 1498]. Seven individual woodcuts, neatly excised from leaves of the original book. Approximately 4.75 x 3.75 inches. Woodcuts include the following cuts by Dürer: Of Oppressed Fools; Of Godís Plagued and Punishments; Of Jabbering in the Choir. Cut entitled Prosecuting of Good Men is attributed to the artist Gnad-Her-Meister. The remaining cuts, including: Power of Fatuity; Foolish Messengers; Of the Weirdness of Some New Fools are by unknown artists. Power of Fatuity is slightly faded around left margin. Plagues and Punishments has remnants from a previous mount, with no affect. Oppressed Fools has some repairs on verso, with little effect on recto. Each woodcut is individually mounted and matted with cloth tape at the upper verso. Some text on verso visible on recto, some minor toning, else fine woodcuts with generally fine impressions.

Ship of Fools devotes each chapter to the sins and vices of different fools, each being accompanied by a fine woodcut. Most of the woodcuts depict the fool wearing a traditional jester's cap in a variety of settings. The majority of the cuts in the book are attributed to Dürer, with the remainder attributed to Gnad-Her-Meister, the Haintz-Nar-Meister and two unknown artists. Ship of Fools was Dürer's first commissioned work.

    Schramm: 1157, 1185, 1187, 1193, 1196, 1124, 1128.
