    Description

[Abraham Lincoln, subject]. Liebman Adler. Fünf Reden. Chicago: Dampfspressen Druck der "Illinois Staatszeitung," 1866. First edition of a rare and unusual piece of Lincolniana, and the first published Jewish sermon specifically about Abraham Lincoln, delivered and published in Chicago, Illinois. Small octavo. 20 pages. Modern quarter brown levant morocco over marbled boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt, six compartments with five raised bands; marbled endpapers. Final leaf supplied in facsimile (not affecting the Lincoln-titled sermon); upper corner renewed throughout text block; three leaves with fore-edge remargined (pages 13-18); pages 9-10 soiled, with light offsetting to neighboring leaves.

Rabbi Liebman Adler (1812-1892) was the rabbi of the largest Jewish congregation in Chicago (Kehilas Anshe Maarab). As a reformer, Adler was a supporter of President Lincoln and his policies, as were many Jews in that part of the United States at the time. This collection of five sermons were originally delivered March through June, 1865. Four of the five offer effusive praise for President Lincoln (by name), and all sermons were pro-democracy (many Jews from that area were recent immigrants who escaped harsh treatment from European monarchies), and anti-slavery (Adler's congregation vigorously opposed slavery). Adler praised Lincoln for his kindness and respect for the Jewish people, a sentiment not shared by all world leaders. Singerman 1922.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
