The First Appearance in Book Form of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in the Very Rare Cloth Issue

[Abraham Lincoln]. Edward Everett. An Oration delivered on the Battlefield of Gettysburg, (November 19, 1863,) at the Consecration of the Cemetery... by Edward Everett. To which is added Interesting Reports of the Dedicatory Ceremonies; Descriptions of the Battlefield; Incidents and Details of the Battles, &c. New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. First edition. The first book appearance of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which appears on page 40 (it was only preceded by appearances in newspapers, and a Washington Chronicle pamphlet, only three copies of which are extant). Octavo. [2, blank], 48, [2, blank] pages. With an intertextual woodcut plan of the cemetery. Bound in the very rare publisher's full brown cloth over limp boards, boards ruled in blind with blind floral cornerpieces, lettered in gilt on front board, brown coated endleaves. Spine sunned, some rubbing and minor occasional discoloration to binding, some occasional wear or minor chipping to endleaves, gutter facing pages 46 and 47 cracked. Still, a near fine copy of this rare book, very seldom found in the cloth binding (it was also issued in wrappers at lower cost and is more common).

This item was published six days after the dedication ceremony at Gettysburg. "Everett's speech, every word of which is now forgotten, lasted two hours. Lincoln's address... is immortal, one of the supremest utterances of the principles of democratic freedom." [PMM]. Even Everett acknowledged the greatness of Lincoln's speech. Howes E233. Sabin 23263. Printing and the Mind of Man 351.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
