Description

[Abbé Prévost]. [Council of Trent]. Histoire Generale des Voyages. Paris: Chez Didot, Arkstee et Merkus, Panckouke, Rozet and Maradan, 1746-1789. First edition. Twenty quarto volumes. A few half-titles present. Portrait frontispiece in volume I, and profusely illustrated with hundreds of maps and plates inserted throughout. Contemporary brown calf, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, marbled endleaves. Bindings worn, several joints and hinges starting (volume XX seems to be the roughest, but that may be due to the dozens of fold-out plates inserted). Many headcaps chipped. Ink ownership notations on portrait frontispiece and title-page in volume I. Generally, a very good set, uncommon with the later supplemental volumes. Hill 1391. Sabin 65402.

"An important and scarce collection which [also] includes accounts of all the principal early Australian voyages ... as well as an account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch, early voyages to New Guinea and the Palau Islands, and Roggeveen's voyage to Terres Australes, African voyages including the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. Pacific voyages include those of Magellan, Schouten, and Le Maire, Drake, Sarmiento, Cavendish, Spilbergen, Narborough, Rogers, Cowley, Frazier, and Anson. Particularly full accounts are given of the Dutch and French voyages to the East Indies, voyages to China, and the British East India Company's voyages to India and Ceylon" (Hill).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
