    Description

Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor B.Br.Genl. U.S. Army." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Fort Brooke, [Florida]; May 22, 1839. Taylor writes to Roger Jones, the Adjutant General of the U.S. Army. In part: "I have the honor to request that you will send me as early as convenient a copy of my report of the killed and wounded in the engagement near Lake Okeechobee on the 25th of December 1837... P.S. Also a copy of any detailed report of the affair of the 25th Decr. 1837."

Following the acquisition of Florida from Spain, the U.S. military faced growing tensions with Seminole tribes who were being pushed out of the area. Fighting eventually broke out in 1835, and the U.S. would not defeat the Seminoles until December 25, 1837 at the Battle of Okeechobee, where Zachary Taylor led U.S. troops. U.S. Casualties were minimal, although the number of troops killed was twice that of the Seminoles, and army wounded surpassed 100, versus 14 for the Indians.

Both sides claimed victory after the Seminoles escaped from the American troops badly mired in the saw grass. Taylor was promoted to brigadier general and awarded command of all the troops in the state for his efforts. It was during this very battle that he earned the moniker "Old Rough and Ready," for his unpretentious appearance and manner. The battle also marked the turning point in the Second Seminole War and paved the way for General Taylor's political career. Taylor became president in 1848, but his term was cut short when he died of flu after only 16 months in office. To this day, the Battle of Lake Okeechobee is commemorated with an annual reenactment.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
