Zachary Taylor Autograph Letter Signed as Whig presidential candidate regarding a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.5", Baton Rouge, Louisiana, October 2, 1848. Following his dramatic successes in the Mexican War, General "Rough and Ready" Taylor was nominated by the Whig Party as their candidate for president. In the final month of his campaign, the general took time to answer this letter, which requested information about Declaration Signer George Taylor, to whom Zachary Taylor was not related.

The letter is addressed to Oscar Keiler of Columbus, Mississippi, and reads in full: "My dear Sir: Your polite letter of the 18th ultimo has been duly received. I regret to inform you in reply that I can give you no information touching[?] the papers of George Taylor, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania. I am Sir, Very respectfully, Yr Obt. Servt, Z. Taylor." Having spent his entire adult life in the military, Taylor's political background was something of a mystery to the populace. It isn't surprising, then, that many believed the presidential candidate was related to Declaration Signer George Taylor. Letter is lightly toned with mounting traces and professional edge strengthening on second page, verso. Large, bold signature.
