    Description

X-15 Record-Setter Robert M. White Autograph Letter Signed with Color Photo. A one page letter on plain white 7" x 8.5" stationery, dated August 20, 1990, to a Mr. Arloff. It reads, in full: "I was pleased to autograph your envelope. It was most kind of you to provide a copy of that long ago Life magazine. Would you believe that I no longer, until now, had a copy of that magazine. In its memories I treasure it. Kindest regards Robert M. White". The magazine he mentions was the August 3, 1962, issue of LIFE with his photo on the cover and the headline "Boy, That Was A Ride". On July 17, 1962, White had flown the X-15 to an altitude of 314,750 feet becoming the first person to earn his astronaut wings without a conventional spacecraft. Included with this lot is a color photo of him in the cockpit of an X-15, suitable for matting or display. Letter very fine.
